PM Netanyahu’s Speech at Holocaust Remembrance Day

Yesterday morning, I visited an old-age home for Holocaust survivors.  There, I met Idit Yapo, an amazing woman of 104, clear and lucid.  Idit fled Germany shortly after Hitler gained power, in 1934.

I met 89-year-old Esther Nadiv, one of Mendele’s twins.  She was reading a book, Golda Meir’s biography, and she told me, with a glint in her eye, she said:  “I am so proud, so very proud to be a part of the State of Israel which is in constant development.”

I met Hanoch Mandelbaum, an 89-year-old survivor of Bergen-Belsen.  Shortly after he came to Israel, as a young carpenter, he helped construct the desk upon which Ben Gurion signed the Declaration of Independence.  That is MiSho’a liTkuma – from holocaust to resurrection.

And I met Elisheva Lehman, an 88 year-old Holocaust survivor from Holland, who was a music teacher.

I asked Elisheva if she would play something for us and she did.  She enthusiastically played “Am Yisrael Chai” and we all sung together.  It was quite emotional.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Am Yisrael Chai [The nation of Israel lives]

Our enemies tried to bury the Jewish future, but it was reborn in the land of our forefathers.  Here, we built a foundation for a new beginning of freedom, hope, and creation.  Year after year, decade after decade, we built the foundations of our country, and we will continue to yearly strengthen the pillars of our national life.

On this day, when our entire nation gathers together to remember the horrors of the Holocaust and the six million Jews who were murdered, we must fulfill our most sacred obligation.

This obligation is not merely an obligation to remember the past.  It is an obligation to learn its lessons, and, most importantly, to apply them to the present in order to secure the future of our people.  We must remember the past and secure the future by applying the lessons of the past.

This is especially true for this generation – a generation that once again is faced with calls to annihilate the Jewish State.

One day, I hope that the State of Israel will enjoy peace with all the countries and all the peoples in our region.  One day, I hope that we will read about these calls to destroy the Jews only in history books and not in daily newspapers.

But that day has not yet come.

Today, the regime in Iran openly calls and determinedly works for our destruction.  And it is feverishly working to develop atomic weapons to achieve that goal.

I know that there are those who do not like when I speak such uncomfortable truths.  They prefer that we not speak of a nuclear Iran as an existential threat.  They say that such language, even if true, only sows fear and panic.

I ask, have these people lost all faith in the people of Israel?

Do they think that this nation, which has overcome every danger, lacks the strength to confront this new threat?

Did the State of Israel not triumph over existential threats when it was far less powerful than it is today?  Did its leaders have any qualms about saying the truth?

David Ben Gurion told the people of Israel the truth about the existential dangers they faced in 1948 when five Arab armies tried to snuff Israel out in its cradle.

Levi Eshkol told the people of Israel the truth in 1967 when a noose was being placed around Israel’s neck and we stood alone to face our fate.

And when they heard these truths, did the people of Israel panic or did they unite to thwart the dangers?  Were we paralyzed with fear or did we do what was necessary to protect ourselves.

I believe in the people of Israel – and this belief is based on our experiences.  I believe that the people of Israel can handle the truth.  And I believe that they we have the capability to defeat those who seek to harm us.

Those who dismiss Iran’s threats as exaggerated or as mere idle posturing have learned nothing from the Holocaust.  But we should not be surprised.

There have always been those among us who prefer to mock those who tell uncomfortable truths than squarely face the truth themselves.

That is how Zev Jabotinsky was received when he warned the Jews of Poland of the looming Holocaust.

This is what he said in 1938, in Warsaw:

“It is already THREE years that I am calling upon you, Polish Jewry, who are the crown of World Jewry.  I continue to warn you incessantly that a catastrophe is coming closer.  I became grey and old in these years, my heart bleeds, that you, dear brother and sisters, do not see the volcano which will soon begin to spit its all-consuming lava…  I see that you are not seeing this because you are immersed and sunk in your daily worries…  Listen to me in this twelfth hour:  In the name of G-d!  Let anyone of you save himself, as long as there is still time, and time there is very little.”

But the leading Jewish intellectuals of the day ridiculed Jabotinsky, and rather than heed his warning, they attacked him.

This is what Sholem Asch, one of our nation’s greatest writers, said about him:
“What Jabotinsky is now doing in Poland is going too far.  His statement is detrimental to Zionism and to the vital interests of our people… It is disgraceful that these are leaders of a nation.”

I know there are also those who believe that the unique evil of the Holocaust should never be invoked in discussing other threats facing the Jewish people.

To do so, they argue, is to belittle the Holocaust and to offend its victims.

I totally disagree.  On the contrary.  To cower from speaking the uncomfortable truth – that today like then, there are those who want to destroy millions of Jewish people – that is to belittle the Holocaust, that is to offend its victims and that is to ignore the lessons.

Not only does the Prime Minister of Israel have the right, when speaking of these existential dangers, to invoke the memory of a third of our nation which was annihilated.  It is his duty.

There is a memorable scene in Claude Lanzmann’s documentary Shoah that explains this obligation more than anything.

In the harsh existence in the Warsaw Ghetto, Leon Feiner of the Bund and Menachem Kirschenbaum of the General Zionists met with Jan Karski from the Polish World War II Resistance Movement.

Jan Karski was a decent, sensitive man, and they begged him to appeal to the conscience of the world against the Nazi crimes.  They described what was happening, they showed him, but to no avail.

They said: “Help us.  We have no country of our own, we have no government, and we even have no voice among the nations”

They were right.

Seventy years ago the Jewish people did not have the national capacity to summon the nations, nor the military might to defend itself.

But today things are different.

Today we have an army.

We have the ability, the duty and the determination to defend ourselves.

As Prime Minister of Israel, I will never shy from speaking the truth before the world, no matter how uncomfortable it may seem to some.

I speak the truth at the United Nations; I speak the truth in Washington DC, the capital of our great friend, the United States, and in other important capitals; And I speak the truth here in Jerusalem, on the grounds of Yad VaShem which are saturated with remembrance.

I will continue to speak the truth to the world, but first and foremost I must speak it to my own people. I know that my people is strong enough to hear the truth.

The truth is that a nuclear-armed Iran is an existential threat of the State of Israel.

The truth is that a nuclear-armed Iran is an political threat to other countries throughout the region and a grave threat to the world peace.

The truth is that Iran must be stopped from obtaining nuclear weapons.

It is the duty of the whole world, but above and beyond, it is OUR duty.

The memory of the Holocaust goes beyond holding memorial services; it is not merely a historical recollection.

The memory of the Holocaust obligates us to apply the lessons of the past to ensure the basis of our future.

We will never bury our heads in the sand.

Secret Service Looking Into Ted Nugent Violent Anti-Obama Message

The U.S. Secret Service is looking into a violent rant by "Catch Scratch Fever" rocker Ted Nugent in which he denounced President Barack Obama and his top advisers as "evil" and urged National Rifle Association members to help "chop their heads off in November."

"I'll tell you this right now: If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year," Nugent said. "We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November. Any questions?"READ THE FULL STORY AT ABC NEWS

Palin: Obama's 'Naive Assault' on American Energy Will Doom the Economy

ERIC BOLLING, CO-HOST: Hello, everyone. I'm Eric Bolling, along with Andrea Tantaros, Bob Beckel, Dana Perino, and Greg Gutfeld.

It's 5:00 in New York City. And this is THE FIVE.

(MUSIC)

BOLLING: Well, you are looking at President Obama making unscheduled remarks today regarding gasoline prices, suggesting Congress address oil speculation.

Funny, Governor Sarah Palin and I spent the weekend offering the president some of our expertise for lowering gasoline prices. Drill our own vast natural resources, embrace natural gas, fix the EPA and address oil speculation.

Do you think he was listening? Who knows? But let's ask Governor Palin herself who joins us via phone.

Governor, thanks for joining us. You know, how are you?

SARAH PALIN, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR (via telephone): I'm doing great. Thank you so much.

BOLLING: All right. So you heard him address oil speculation, but that was -- that was one part. Is that enough to solve our energy crisis, Governor? What did he miss?

PALIN: No. Not even close to solving if problem here.

The other night, we proposed an all of the above solution. And we challenged the president to apply common sense and pro-American industry principles. And, no, today's speech reflected a lack of awareness of what the problem really is, and that solution has to be part of, beyond a three- leg solution but multifaceted solution, and that is what we proposed. Krauthammer: Campaign Will Be So Dirty 'Check the Plumbing, You'll Have to Shower Several Times a Day'

O'REILLY: "Back of the Book" segment tonight, there is no question the presidential campaign will be largely negative, and Mitt Romney will be attacked pretty much 24/7.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KAREN FINNEY, FORMER DNC COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR: The picture that he was painting of an America, you know, restoring an America. I kept thinking it sounds like you want to go back to a time when women couldn't vote, blacks couldn't vote. We didn't have -- I mean, it just didn't sound like this was the America that we all know.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O'REILLY: Yes, of course. Governor Romney doesn't want blacks and women to vote. Of course, that's part of his platform.

Joining us now from Washington, FOX News political analyst Charles Krauthammer.

So, has it reached critical mass in April? I mean, are we there already where this is so insane that people are just going to laugh about it?

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: Well, who knows if they'll laugh about it? Negative campaigns can work. And we're getting a taste of it right now.

I think Romney's strategy should be to embrace that negativity. Just go for it and point out -- go back to it and point out how it's a sign of scurrilousness and hypocrisy. Look at the mean that Democrats have put out from top to bottom.

Republicans, Romney, the war on women, the concocted idea. War on immigrants. We heard from that. War on blacks. And it's also class warfare. The war on the middle class, you know, comforting the rich and making sure they don't pay their fair share.

The hypocrisy here, of course, is that Barack Obama shot to the international consciousness by giving a speech in which he said he would unite red America and blue America. We're not black America, white America, we're the United States of America.

He's running -- the Democrats are running the most divisive campaign on race, on ethnicity, on class and on gender. I mean, it's going to be the dirtiest campaign you've ever seen.

O'REILLY: I think so. More

Michelle Obama: 'This President Has Brought Us Out of the Dark And Into The Light'

First lady Michelle Obama hit the campaign trail in Nashville on Tuesday and told a packed crowd in a downtown office building that the campaign has an "amazing story to tell."

The first lady made roughly the same stump speech of recent weeks, chronicling the acomplishments of her husband's first term, from the auto industry rescue to health care reform, ending the war in Iraq and the killing of Osama bin Laden. In a roughly 26-minute speech to a crowd of about 450, she also appealed to women voters, highlighting her husband's signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

Video ~ Obama in Colombia Scouting Out Potential Vacation Spots For Michelle !!!

Obama in Colombia to scout out potential vacation spots for his family.

As his trip to Colombia for a 33-country Summit of the Americas had already been tainted by a Secret Service prostitution scandal, Obama faced fierce criticism from Latin American leaders. Colombian and Brazilian leaders criticized the bailout efforts, contending that America’s programs to jumpstart the economy have hurt foreign trade by raising the price of goods sold to the U.S.

During the Summit, Obama, attempting to appeal to the local crowd, let loose that “part of his job is to scout out” where he wants to bring Michelle back for vacation. No Obama, that is not part of your job.

Michigan lotto winner charged with welfare fraud

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan woman who continued to get food stamps after winning a $1 million lottery jackpot was arraigned Tuesday on welfare fraud charges.
Amanda Clayton, 25, of Lincoln Park was arrested on Monday. If convicted of the two felony charges, she could face up to four years in prison.
"It's simply common sense that million dollar lottery winners forfeit their right to public assistance," Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement Tuesday. "We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to uphold state laws intended to ensure wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars."
Clayton stood silently during her arraignment at Lincoln Park's 25th District Court. Defense lawyer Stanley Wise said he hopes to have charges dismissed at her next court hearing April 24. He didn't elaborate.
"She's upset but she'll be fine," Wise said.
Clayton chose a $700,000 lump sum, before taxes, last fall after winning the jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" a Michigan lottery game show. More

Taxpayers pay millions to mow lawns of foreclosed homes !!!

American taxpayers own close to 200,000 vacant houses, and over the next year they will spend more than $40 million just to mow lawns at these properties. Taxpayers also foot the bills to paint walls, fix cabinets, plant flowers and more -- expenses that just last year, exceeded a half a billion dollars.

The housing bailout has already cost taxpayers $124 million, now Americans are spending hundreds of millions more fixing up foreclosed homes to try and sell them. It is a bizarre and expensive side effect of the housing market collapse and failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage giants that went into federal conservatorship in 2008.

Fannie Mae alone repaired nearly 90,000 homes last year.

"That is a lot of homes, and it is a lot of materials that need to be purchased," said Jay Ryan, Fannie Mae's vice president of real estate owned homes. More

Ahmadinejad warns against aggression on Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's armed forces will make its enemies regret any act of aggression against the Islamic Republic, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned on Tuesday as Iranians marked National Army Day with a military parade near the capital Tehran.
Although Ahmadinejad did not specify any countries, such language used by Iranian officials is a common reference to the West, especially the United States and Israel.
The harsh tone was typical of speeches for military events but it contrasted sharply with a sense of cautious progress after the direct talks with world powers last week on Tehran's nuclear ambitions. The remarks could leave Western officials confused by the mixed signals.
"Our armed forces will make the enemy face a heavy and shameful regret if they commit any aggression and violate Iran's interests," Ahmadinejad said in a speech broadcast live on state TV.
Both the U.S. and Israel have not ruled out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities, which the West suspects are geared toward making nuclear arms — a charge Tehran denies, insisting its program is for peaceful purposes only. Iran's refusal to halt the uranium enrichment program has been its main point of contention with the West.
"The foreign interference will bear nothing but destruction, rifts and insecurity" in the region, Ahmadinejad said.
The comments are typical of rhetoric that has been coming out of Tehran, belligerent one day, conciliatory the next. More

Bernanke to Congress: We're Much Closer to Total Destruction Than You Think

Official Congressional budget estimates understate the peril of rising debt, Fed chair Ben Bernanke told the Budget Committee on Capitol Hill today.

Warning that our nation's fiscal health has deteriorated appreciably since the onset of the financial crisis and the recession, Bernanke called upon lawmakers to confront the long term fiscal challenges sooner rather than later. If lawmakers don't confront them, they'll find themselves confronted by them.

From Bernanke's prepared remarks:

By definition, the unsustainable trajectories of deficits and debt that the CBO outlines cannot actually happen, because creditors would never be willing to lend to a government with debt, relative to national income, that is rising without limit. One way or the other, fiscal adjustments sufficient to stabilize the federal budget must occur at some point. The question is whether these adjustments will take place through a careful and deliberative process that weighs priorities and gives people adequate time to adjust to changes in government programs or tax policies, or whether the needed fiscal adjustments will come as a rapid and painful response to a looming or actual fiscal crisis.

Bernanke explained that the Congressional Budget Office's calculations miss an important reality. As the government's debt and deficits rise, the economy will slow down—an effect not taken into account by the CBO. So, for instance, when the CBO says that federal spending for health-care programs will roughly double as a percentage of GDP in the next 25 years, it is probably being too optimistic. If debt keeps, rising, GDP will be much lower than the CBO estimates—which will mean that health care spending will be a much larger percentage of the overall economy. Read More

TAMPA — You betcha Sarah Palin will be at the August Republican National Convention.

The political action committee for the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate plunked down $4,500 to reserve space at Channelside Bay Plaza for the big political event.

But the space at Channelside — a short walk from the Forum — will allow her an independent platform away from the formal event and access to some of the 15,000 journalists expected to cover the convention. More

Obama Administration Leaks More Israeli Defense Secrets

The leaks continue from the Obama administration with regard to Israeli defense secrets. On Sunday, the New Yorker printed a report stating that US had worked with the Iranian opposition group Mujahideen-e-Khalq (MEK). The US was apparently receiving intelligence from the group, including intercepted cell phone calls and text messages. But sources also confirmed that Mossad was helping to funnel resources and train members of the MEK. As Seymour Hersh writes:

[E]arly last month NBC News quoted two senior Obama Administration officials as confirming that the attacks were carried out by M.E.K. units that were financed and trained by Mossad, the Israeli secret service. NBC further quoted the Administration officials as denying any American involvement in the M.E.K. activities. The former senior intelligence official I spoke with seconded the NBC report that the Israelis were working with the M.E.K., adding that the operations benefitted from American intelligence. He said that the targets were not “Einsteins”; “The goal is to affect Iranian psychology and morale,” he said, and to “demoralize the whole system—nuclear delivery vehicles, nuclear enrichment facilities, power plants.” Attacks have also been carried out on pipelines. He added that the operations are “primarily being done by M.E.K. through liaison with the Israelis, but the United States is now providing the intelligence.”

Obama likens himself to "that wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior" Ronald Reagan

President Obama surrounded himself with wealthy taxpayers and invoked the name of Ronald Reagan Wednesday as he made another pitch for Congress to raise taxes on people with incomes of more than $1 million.

“It’s not that these folks are excited about paying more taxes,” Mr. Obama said of the eight executives who stood with him on a stage at the White House. “I have yet to meet people who just love to pay taxes.”

Not Even CBS News Buys It: Scott Pelley Scoffs at Obama Adopting Reagan as His Own

But the president again urged the Senate, in at least his 21st comments on the tax hike since last fall, to approve the so-called “Buffett rule” when lawmakers vote on Monday. The legislation would require people with income over $1 million to pay at least 30 percent in federal income taxes. It’s named for billionaire investor Warren Buffett, who says it’s not fair for him to pay a lower percentage of taxes than his secretary.

But Senate Minority Leader MItch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said the president is wasting his time, and hurting the economic recovery to boot.

“With millions out of work, gas at nearly $4 a gallon, and the election still seven months away, Republicans are calling on the president to join us in support of the dozens of jobs and energy bills that have passed the House but are stalled in the Democrat-led Senate,” Mr. McConnell said. “We should be focused on jobs and energy legislation that can pass — not tax-hike show votes designed to fail.”

Mr. Obama, whose rationale for the tax hike has shifted from the need for deficit reduction to the need for tax fairness, cited both reasons and threw in the impact of the Buffett rule on economic growth Wednesday in trying to justify the tax increase.

“Right now we’ve got significant deficits that are going to have to be closed,” Mr. Obama said. “Right now we have significant needs if we want to continue to grow this economy. … That means we can’t afford to keep spending more money on tax cuts for wealthy Americans who don’t need them and weren’t even asking for them.”

The campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, criticized the White House for not being able to keep its story straight on the justification for the tax hike.

“President Obama’s White House is still trying to re-write history on why they’re pushing a tax hike plan instead of trying to get the economy moving again,” said Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul. “Maybe that’s because after three years of failed economic policies, the only thing President Obama is able to do is distract from his failure to create jobs and economic growth.”

Mr. Obama derided Republicans for accusing him of trying to redistribute wealth, although he didn’t quite deny it.

“I want to emphasize, this is not simply an issue of redistributing wealth,” Mr. Obama said. “This is not just about fairness, this is about growth. It is also about making investments we need to succeed. And it’s about we as a country being willing to pay for those investments and closing our deficits.”

The legislation would raise about $47 billion over 10 years, while Mr. Obama’s annual budgets have been running deficits of more than $1 trillion. The president acknowledged that adopting the Buffett rule wouldn’t close deficits by itself, but said that’s no reason to reject it.

“The Buffett rule is something that will get us moving in the right direction,” he said.

Mr. Obama called on Republican lawmakers to drop their “reflexive” opposition to tax increases, and maintained that President Reagan supported a similar tax hike in 1985 by closing loopholes in the tax code.

“I’m not the first president to call for this idea that everybody’s got to do their fair share,” he said. “Some years ago, one of my predecessors traveled across the country, pushing for the same concept. That wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior was Ronald Reagan. He thought that in America, the wealthiest should pay their fair share.”

Obama Allocates $500M to IRS to Prepare for ObamaCare

President Obama has allocated $500 million to the IRS to prepare for ObamaCare, a move that’s drawn criticism from Republicans who would rather wait until the Supreme Court rules on the law in June.

Laura Ingraham commented on Fox and Friends, saying that she’s not surprised because “If Washington has access to money, Washington will spend money.”

She continued, “Even for an election year, even for a Democrat, even for President Obama it’s really kind of low-rent, right? It looks like the Supreme Court’s going to overturn this. It’s injudicious to say the very least, and I think it smacks of politics, of the worst type of behavior for an elected official to go ahead and push the spending of that money before the Supreme Court rules.” Read More

Google begins testing ‘Terminator’-style smartphone glasses

Google on Wednesday unveiled Project Glass, a secret program designed to bring augmented-reality to the masses.

The team leading the initiative, including Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thrun, are part of Google’s clandestine Google X labs, a branch of the company that focuses on futuristic tech and big picture concepts, such as space elevators, robots and driverless cars.

Now with the project ready for public testing, the team has begun releasing fresh information, including a new video, on their Google + page with requests for feedback.

“We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input,” the team wrote in a post. “Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?”

According to a February report from the NYTimes, Google’s new Android-powered glasses will allow you to check your email, update your Facebook, or even check-in to your favorite restaurant. The device creates a direct link to your smartphone, providing real-time information in a heads-up display (HUD).
